Due: Tuesday, February 12, 2013
The purpose of the program is to bring to the University distinguished persons whose careers in arts, letters, sciences, or business have been substantially outside the academic profession. Each Department Chair, Professional School Dean or Unit Director may nominate a maximum of one candidate.
Regents' Lecturers present a public presentation and meet with students and faculty, ideally for several days or up to 2 weeks. Regents Lecturers receive a $5,000 honorarium, lodging, and travel expenses. The hosting unit receives up to $1,000 to defray costs of renting a lecture hall, publicizing, and archiving the presentation.
Regents' Lecturers are expected to offer at least one public lecture and to be available for seminars, colloquia, and informal consultation with faculty and students. They may participate in courses of instruction, and they may teach or co-teach lectures at the discretion of the unit's chair, dean or director, and with the concurrence of the appropriate bodies of the Academic Senate.
In addition to the honorarium, the program provides one round-trip coach airfare with a pre-approved not-to-exceed ceiling (or airfare equivalent if no airfare is involved) to the visitor. The host unit receives $1,000 to defray general expenses. Lodging will be provided by the Regents' Lectureship Program at one of the Campus Faculty Clubs. The host unit is responsible for additional hospitality, including office space, publicity (for a minimum of one free Regents' Lecture, open to the general community), and information regarding services such as library use and Recreational Sports Facility use, and for international visitors who are non-resident aliens, assistance with any visa issues or needed health insurance coverage. It is strongly recommended that the nominating unit consult Sook Hollingshead, International Scholar Advisor, Berkeley International Office (sook@berkeley.edu), with all visa questions prior to nominating an international visitor.
