Vice Provost for the Faculty
The mission of the Office of the Vice Provost for the Faculty is to ensure the continued excellence of Berkeley's faculty—and of its entire academic staff—so that our campus can fulfill its core missions: offering broad access to a superb education, pushing forward the frontiers of knowledge, and serving the public good.
As Vice Provost, I work to maintain high standards and fair processes in deciding cases for appointment, promotion, and merit increases. I help faculty, chairs, and deans to stay up to date about the University's policies and practices so that we can sustain a broadly shared understanding across our campus. I collaborate with the Provost and the Academic Senate's Budget Committee on many issues, including decisions about search authorizations for hiring new faculty members.
In partnership with the Associate Vice Provost for the Faculty, I have responsibilities for making Berkeley a place where pre-eminent faculty will choose to make their careers. That means ensuring that all faculty members know they will be equitably treated here, including those who are members of historically under-represented groups. The Associate Vice Provost and I develop and oversee programs that help faculty members to sustain rewarding family lives while advancing their careers, and to flourish at every stage of their academic lives. Our office also collects and analyzes data to assess the effectiveness of our current faculty programs and to identify areas in which the campus may need new initiatives.
