The purpose of the program is to bring to the University distinguished persons whose careers in arts, letters, sciences, or business have been substantially outside the academic profession. (View list of 2008-09 Regents' Lecturers))
Appointments of Regents' Professors are usually for one semester; Regents' Lecturers ordinarily serve one to two weeks. The payment for both Regents' Professors and Lecturers is in the form of an honorarium. When appropriate, a Regents' Lecturer's appointment may be organized as a series of several brief visits. In extraordinary circumstances, a Regents' Lecturer may be invited for three to five days.
Regents' Professors or Lecturers are expected to offer occasional public lectures and to be available for seminars, colloquia, and informal consultation with faculty and students. They may participate in courses of instruction, and may teach or co-teach a course at the discretion of the Department Chair or Dean, and with the concurrence of the appropriate bodies of the Academic Senate. They should also be prepared to accept invitations to lecture or attend seminars on other University of California campuses, which will cover the necessary costs.
Nominations are made by Schools/Departments through their deans/department chairs. A nominee's profession should not primarily be a professorial appointment, as the program is structured to invite distinguished persons from outside the academic profession. If two or more units wish to sponsor a specific candidate, each nominating unit should state the reason for its choice of the nominee. It is also possible to coordinate an appointment with a school/department on another campus of the University of California.
In addition to the honorarium, the program provides one round-trip coach airfare with a pre-approved not-to-exceed ceiling (or airfare equivalent if no airfare is involved) to the visitor. The host unit receives $400 to defray general expenses. The host unit is responsible for appropriate hospitality, including office space, publicity (for a minimum of one free Regents' Lecture, open to the general community), and information regarding services such as library use and Recreational Sports Facility use, and for international visitors who are non-resident aliens, assistance with the immigration process and health insurance coverage. It is strongly recommended that the nominating unit consult Sook Hollingshead, International Scholar Advisor, Berkeley International Office (sook@berkeley.edu), with all visa questions prior to nominating an international visitor. Housing arrangements and expenses are the responsibility of the visitor.
The Regents request that nominating departments refrain from communicating with candidates under consideration.
Applications and supporting letters should be forwarded by the nominating Schools/Departments' deans and/or department chairs to MC 1500, attention: Cathy Romanski, Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Faculty Welfare, 200 California Hall, by Tuesday, February 17, 2009.
The nominating school(s)/department(s) should include the following information with the nomination:
-
Biographical information, including academic appointments, if any;
-
Letters of support and samples of publications;
-
Stipulation of the program planned for the nominee;
-
Travel expenses (The nominee will be reimbursed for coach class round-trip airfare at a pre-approved not-to-exceed amount);
-
Preferred period of stay;
-
Contact information for the nominee, including address, telephone and/or fax numbers, and e-mail.
Nominations for Regents' Professors must be approved by the Regents. This review process may take up to three months. The Chancellor approves appointments of Regents' Lecturers, and this review process is usually shorter. Once approved, the invitation for a Regents' Professorship or Lectureship is valid only for the academic year for which it is issued.
Professor Emeritus John M. Letiche (510 526-4761, letiche@econ.berkeley.edu) is Chair of the Campus Committee for the program. Cathy Romanski, Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (510 642-7759, romanski@berkeley.edu), is the administrative program manager. Nominating deans or department chairs should direct inquiries regarding any administrative issues to either Professor Emeritus Letiche or Ms. Romanski.
