The University of California, Berkeley, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Chemistry. The appointment will be effective July 1, 2013.
The College is comprised of two departments, Chemistry and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering. It aims to continue its tradition of fundamental research into chemical and related sciences, while at the same time meeting major scientific and technological challenges of today's world, such as addressing climate change, increasing the world's food supply, synthesizing new materials, and discovering and delivering new drugs. The College embraces both experimental and theoretical approaches, and its faculty are engaged in teaching and research across a wide range of subdisciplines.
The dean will be expected to provide the College with academic, intellectual and administrative leadership, helping it to develop and advance its vision for the future in teaching, research, and public service. In addition, the dean will have responsibilities for fund-raising and for building strong relationships with alumni and other external partners.

The highly ranked School of Optometry has a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, research, and service to the community as a result of its very accomplished clinical and vision science faculty. It prepares professionals for careers in optometry, and it advances vision science through research and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. These activities are uniquely fostered by the placement of the School on the vibrant Berkeley campus with its highly ranked and collaborative academic programs.
The dean will be expected to provide the School with academic, intellectual, and administrative leadership, helping the School to fulfill its missions in clinical optometry and in basic and clinical eye and vision research. In addition, the dean will have responsibility for fund-raising and for sustaining strong relationships with alumni and the profession.
Applicants for the position must have a professional optometric degree, with a distinguished record of research and instruction that would warrant tenured appointment as Professor. Applications are welcomed from individuals whose experience has prepared them to make strong contributions to diversity and inclusion in higher education. A background in academic and clinical administration is desirable, along with a mature understanding of the needs of the School, trends in the optometric profession, and their relation to emerging health care concerns.

The School offers a variety of undergraduate, M.P.H. and Ph.D. programs, including several that are offered concurrently with other schools on the Berkeley Campus, including the Haas School of Business, the Goldman School of Public Policy, the School of Social Welfare, the School of Journalism, the College of Environmental Design, and with medical schools at UC San Francisco and Stanford. Areas of concentration include: Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences, Health Policy & Management, Health & Social Behavior, Infectious Diseases & Vaccinology, Maternal & Child Health, Public Health Nutrition and other interdisciplinary areas such as Aging, Global Health and Multi-Cultural Health. The latest National Research Council analysis of U.S. universities found that UC Berkeley has the largest number of highly ranked doctoral programs in the country, including four in the School of Public Health.
